Dr. Louise Imlay-Gillespie is a dedicated clinical and laboratory haematologist serving the Northern Rivers community. She completed her medical training at the University of Newcastle before undertaking her internship and residency on the Central Coast of NSW. She then progressed to physician training at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, where she also completed her haematology specialty training. Dr Imlay-Gillespie holds dual fellowship qualifications with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA).
In 2016, Louise relocated to the Northern Rivers to complete her final year of training under the guidance of Professor Ram Seshadri before his retirement. She now works as a staff specialist at Lismore Base Hospital and provides an outreach clinic in Grafton, ensuring high-quality haematology care for regional patients.
Committed to improving healthcare in the region, Louise has been actively involved in medical leadership and advocacy. She previously served as co-chair of NorDocs, fostering collaboration between specialists and GPs, and has held the role of Chair of the Medical Staff Council at Lismore Base Hospital. Additionally, she is a member of the Rural and Regional Working Party within the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group (ALLG), working to expand access to therapeutic trials in regional areas. She also served as Director of Medicine at Lismore Base Hospital until 2020, following a tenure as Deputy Director.
Louise is highly experienced in managing both malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions. Her expertise includes acute and chronic leukaemia, myelodysplasia, myeloproliferative disorders, myeloma, and lymphoma. She is also trained in autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. In addition to cancer care, she provides comprehensive management for conditions such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), iron disorders, anaemia, and disorders of thrombosis and haemostasis. She works closely with the palliative care team when needed and has extensive experience in end-of-life care.
With a holistic, patient-centred approach to medicine, Louise believes in working collaboratively with her patients to achieve the best possible outcomes. She is deeply committed to understanding their goals and ensuring they receive compassionate, high-quality care tailored to their needs.
